Judith Beheading Holofernes (1599)
Caravaggio
Judith, biblical heroine, enters the tent of Holofernes and decapitates him saving her town from invasion by the Assyrians. Her servant side-kick is usually used to distinguish her from Salome (another biblical beheader).

My former painting teacher, Marvin Mattelson’s portrait, for Old Speckled Hen. If you are anywhere near SVA I’d highly recommend you sign up for one of Marvin’s classes (undergrad or continuing education) before he goes on sabbatical.
